The accused, 18, studied at the same school as the victim, a 16‑year‑old girl. Police say he lured her into his home when his family were away and threatened to marry her.
When the girl became pregnant, he allegedly searched YouTube for ways to induce abortion, and concocted a herbal mixture that he forced her to ingest for weeks.
On Monday, the girl went into labour and delivered a baby at home. Doctors at Government Medical College and Hospital noted severe complications and alerted police.
Police recorded her statement and filed a charge under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of the POCSO Act.
The accused is now being handed over to the Child Welfare Committee, which will oversee his legal process and provide counselling.
The case highlights the dangers of unverified medical advice and the vulnerability of adolescent girls in rural Maharashtra.
