The Bishnupur Sarbajanin Durga Puja committee marked its 76th year with a Platinum Jubilee on May 8, 2026, as lakhs of devotees streamed into Guwahati’s Bishnupur Pandal, setting a new attendance record.
The pandal’s centerpiece—a Shivling plunged beneath a cascading waterfall—served as the gateway to an underwater realm, while intricately carved Naag Devta statues lined the path. Visitors navigated the site in custom boats that mirrored the theme, creating an immersive pilgrimage.
Five‑year‑old Mridhusmita Pal, a Class II student, laughed as she proclaimed, “I felt very good, and this puja was also very good… I liked everything.” Her delight echoed the crowd’s enthusiasm.
Piyush Kanti Dey, the committee’s adviser, explained that the Naglok concept was chosen to underscore the Platinum Jubilee, stating, “I wanted to introduce a special theme for the occasion.” He added that volunteers, NCC cadets, and CCTV would manage the crowd and ensure safety.
Following the festival’s conclusion, the committee has pledged a post‑event audit of crowd‑control measures, aiming to refine protocols for future celebrations.
