Last week’s CJP rally in Mumbai turned into a courtroom drama when Bollywood’s young star Imran Khan was hauled into a police van—his presence at a satirical political protest sparked a media frenzy.
Mumbai Police’s notice, dated October 10, gave Khan a deadline of October 28 to exit the country, citing his OCI status and the fact that he is a nephew of Bollywood legend Aamir Khan.
Azad, who’s made waves across the music and film circuit, fired back with a scathing Instagram caption that read, “What!? This is absolute BS,” and added that “the state should not be able to silence a citizen for voicing concerns.”
In his own words, Khan explained that he had no demands, only a desire to see why freedoms of movement were being curtailed—“I’m here as a citizen,” he said, before being detained and released that same evening.
With more than 400 protestors detained, the episode has sparked a debate over celebrity activism, OCI regulations, and the state’s role in safeguarding civil liberties. Khan is set to file a petition in the Bombay High Court, while the public watches whether the government will backtrack or double down on its stance.
