Delhi Police arrested Amir Shokeen on Thursday night in the Sadar Bazar area after a suo‑motu investigation into a viral video that showed him humiliating a young man from Tripura
The arrest followed an inquiry by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit, which received a request from the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region to examine the footage, allegedly recorded in Ahmedabad a month earlier.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Niharika Bhatt told PTI that Shokeen is a known troublemaker in Sadar Bazar and has faced prior charges of brawling; she added that the police are pursuing an IPC case for criminal intimidation and hate speech.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha both demanded swift action. Rijiju posted on X that Delhi and Tripura police would "teach him a hard lesson" and called for a transit remand.
The Tripura Students Forum Delhi has filed a complaint seeking an impartial investigation, alleging the video contained sexual assault and harassing language, and has requested the police to preserve electronic evidence, including metadata and upload history.
Police officials say a Tripura police team is expected to arrive in Delhi later tonight to take custody of Shokeen, who will then be presented before a court for a transit remand.
