Firefighters battled a blaze that erupted at 9:50 pm on Friday night, consuming the 1,834‑metre‑high Kehlsteinhaus residence on Obersalzberg. The alarm, triggered by a red‑flagged red motorcycle rider, drew 200 responders who fought the flames until dawn Saturday, when the last embers were extinguished.
The suspect, identified as 33‑year‑old Rainer Vietze‑linked, was apprehended on scene by police after a rider on a licence‑plate‑free motorcycle was stopped by Officer Robert Holzinger.
Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann called the fire a “malicious act” and said authorities would not rule out a political motive. Police spokeswoman Lisa Maier noted that breathing apparatus was required to approach the structure because of collapse risk.
The Eagle’s Nest, built 1937‑38 and once a Nazi propaganda hub, has housed exhibitions and a restaurant since 1952. It attracts roughly 350,000 visitors a year, yet the site was inaccessible until the fire was contained.
Vietze underwent a psychiatric examination and was interned on a provisional basis. The site remains closed while investigators launch a formal inquiry into the motive and will decide on restoration once the case is resolved.
The blaze marks the latest chapter in the building’s turbulent legacy, reminding visitors of the regime’s atrocities and the ongoing effort to preserve remembrance.
