Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Samajwadi Party, has formally requested punitive action against Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, the spiritual head of Bageshwar Dham, following controversial remarks delivered in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. Yadav stated on Monday that the incident requires intervention at the highest levels of administration, citing the potential for the comments to fracture social cohesion.
The controversy stems from a Ram Katha session held in Karera, Shivpuri district, where Shastri allegedly compared the two deities, placing Lord Ram in a superior position to Lord Krishna. A video of the address has since spread across social media, triggering immediate backlash from members of the religious community. While Shastri later clarified that he intended no division between the deities, the damage to public sentiment was immediate and widespread.
Yadav’s response was sharp. In a post on X, accompanied by imagery of Lord Krishna wielding the Sudarshan Chakra, he labeled the remarks “extremely unfortunate and objectionable.” He rejected the premise of ranking incarnations, asking, “What is the rationale behind such undignified comparisons?”
The SP chief went further, suggesting the comments were not isolated but reflected the “designs of someone working behind the scenes.” He warned that failing to check such statements would create an atmosphere of discord and resentment. “People across political parties and their supporters had united in opposing the alleged remarks,” Yadav noted, urging those claiming to represent Sanatan traditions to speak out against what he called venomous expressions against revered deities.
The next step remains ambiguous, as Yadav has called for a formal clarification and punitive measures, but no official legal action has been filed yet. The pressure is now on the Madhya Pradesh administration and central authorities to determine whether this incident warrants statutory intervention or remains a matter of community dialogue. Given the viral nature of the video and the political weight behind Yadav’s demand, silence is unlikely to be an option for the authorities.
