At about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, a shotgun blast outside Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu left 11 people wounded and two in critical condition. Police quickly apprehended the suspect, a student who reportedly snatched a gun from his grandmother's house before fleeing. The incident unfolded amid a tense atmosphere, with parents sprinting to the school and police fencing off the building.
Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said two chief prosecutors were assigned to probe the case and that the suspect’s mother, father and grandfather—owners of the weapon—have been detained. Gurlek emphasized that any negligence in safeguarding children’s safety would not be overlooked.
Investigators are examining how the student accessed the shotgun, how it was stored, and the family’s responsibility for supervision. The suspect, whose age remains unofficial but is thought to be a student, allegedly ran toward the school after discharging the firearm. Video footage shows him running past the entrance with a rifle, prompting police to deploy a cordon.
The attack follows two deadly school shootings in April that claimed eight lives and left dozens injured. In response, Turkey tightened school security for the 2026‑27 academic year, adding stricter gun controls and mandating inspections.
Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci and Education Minister Yusuf Tekin are scheduled to visit Manisa to conduct inspections. The investigation will continue as authorities scrutinize the family’s storage practices and potential lapses in gun control.
