Nirav Sheth, a 40‑year‑old Indian‑origin Republican running for Washington’s 7th Congressional District, said in an interview with NDTV that the Trump administration’s recent H‑1B visa crackdown is justified because many sponsoring firms are fraudulent.
Trump’s executive order last month halted the PERM program for seven companies, including Microsoft, Adobe and Infosys, after alleging they were using green‑card pathways to funnel foreign workers.
Sheth explained the crackdown targets "fake degrees" and "fake documentation" and called for a "rigorous immigration reform" that would allow "real workers" to stay in the country.
He added that a friend who worked at Microsoft for nearly 20 years still lacks a green card, illustrating the slow process that has left many qualified Indians waiting decades.
The endorsement comes as the November 3 midterm election approaches, with the 7th district boasting one of the largest Indian‑American communities in the country.
Sheth hopes the immigration stance will sway voters, making the race a key test of how the issue will play out in the House of Representatives.
