The case began when a woman, who had lived with her boyfriend for three months, took her life after he said he would not marry her. Her sister filed an FIR, claiming the boyfriend’s refusal was the trigger for her decision.
Prosecutors argued that the boyfriend’s friend and family had spoken ill of her, and that her sister’s prospective groom had rejected her if the boyfriend married her, adding pressure to the relationship.
Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, sitting on a Supreme Court bench, found no evidence that the accused instigated the death. They noted that a breakup does not automatically amount to abetment, even if a woman commits suicide afterward.
The bench ordered immediate release of any of the six accused held in custody, unless they were needed for another case, and cancelled any bail bonds already granted.
With the case dismissed, the prosecution’s file of Sessions Case No.101 of 2024 is quashed, and the accused can resume their lives free of the charges.
