Lasonjit Reang, 19, left his hometown of Ananda Bazar in Tripura’s North district for Ahmedabad last July, hoping to secure a service job.
On a return trip from a night interview, a group of around nine men approached him near a restaurant, asking where he was from and mocking his accent. The men recorded the exchange on their phones, a clip that would later spread online.
Reang initially brushed off the harassment, but after the video went viral across social media, he called for justice. Tripura TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma demanded swift action against the harasser.
Tripura police registered a case against the alleged harasser, while Delhi Police, acting on a complaint lodged in the capital, arrested the content creator whose video circulated. The influencer remains in custody as the investigation proceeds.
Reang told reporters he had not felt scared, but the incident left him uneasy about traveling for work. His mother, who wrote to the state government, expressed fear for her son’s safety.
Both state and central authorities are now coordinating to ensure the case is processed through the criminal court in Ahmedabad, with a hearing likely in the coming weeks.
