Navdeep Singh, husband of Shiromani Akali Dal Sarpanch Bibi Kulwinder Kaur, bled out at a private hospital in Tarn Taran after three men opened fire on him in Adda Gaggu Boohah. The attack happened Sunday evening, ending a heated argument with local jeweller Surinder Singh, alias Sonu Kanda.
Police say Kanda, accompanied by Nirmal Singh Nimma and Arshdeep Singh, opened fire, leaving Singh critically injured before he died. DSP (City) Sukhbir Singh confirmed raids are underway to arrest the three, who face charges under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
The shooting has ignited a political firestorm. Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia blasted the state government on X, claiming law and order has "completely collapsed" under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's administration. He argued that elected sarpanches are no longer safe, pointing to the "Guru Dokhi government" failing its people.
Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal labeled the incident a "cold-blooded murder" and demanded the perpetrators be hunted down. While police maintain the incident stems from a personal dispute rather than gangsterism or political rivalry, the SAD leadership is using the tragedy to attack the AAP government's handling of public safety.
