India's INDIA Bloc will convene at the Constitution Club on September 30 to launch a removal motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, after the commission’s other two members lodged 14 objections over a 10‑month period.
The motion is a direct response to the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls, a controversial process that the opposition claims has compromised electoral integrity.
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, TMC’s Mamata Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray will head the meeting, uniting rivals like the TMC and CPI(M).
Agenda items include finalizing the removal strategy, gathering signatures, demanding Kumar’s resignation, and drafting a nationwide agitation plan for states such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The CPI(ML)-Liberation has urged that the meeting extend beyond the INDIA bloc to include all opposition parties and civil society, and has scheduled protests from September 26 to October 2.
Meanwhile, a West Bengal family displaced by alleged irregularities in the SIR has pledged to march in the upcoming protests, illustrating the controversy’s human impact.
