Mumbai Police issued a notice under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, Section 7, ordering actor Imran Khan to depart India by 28 Oct 2026.
The notice follows the actor’s participation in a Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest on Oct 10 at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, where the city’s police detained around 400 people, including activists from Hum Bharat Ke Log and the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Khan, a U.S. citizen holding an OCI card, was among those hauled into a police van for roughly two hours before release. He later posted a photo from the van with the caption “Apparently I’m going for a drive” and said “Jai Hind” to officers.
In a press statement, Khan insisted he had no political demands, claiming he was simply a “citizen of Mumbai” wanting to witness the state of freedom of movement. He added, “I don’t know why I’ve been brought here; they picked us from the streets and drove us around.”
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya demanded that Khan face criminal charges under OCI and visa provisions, calling the actor’s actions an “illegal political agitation.” He urged the police to file a formal FIR.
Under Section 7, the central government can prohibit foreign nationals from staying in India. The notice is a prelude to a possible criminal case, and a court hearing is expected in early November. Meanwhile, Khan’s partner, actress Lekha Washington, has expressed uncertainty over the legal proceedings.
