Banks will shutter their doors in five specific regions on Monday, October 26, 2026. The closures apply to Tripura, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh. Each location observes a distinct local observance, ranging from Laxmi Puja to Accession Day and the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki.
This isn't a nationwide shutdown. The Reserve Bank of India’s holiday schedule varies by state, meaning a customer in Delhi can still walk into a branch while someone in Shillong cannot. For those in the affected zones, the window for physical banking work closes immediately. If you have large cash deposits to make, cheques to clear, or demand drafts to generate, you need to hit the branch before the 26th. Waiting until the 27th means another day of lost productivity or, worse, a bounced transaction due to missed deadlines.
The digital rails, however, keep humming. ATMs, UPI apps, and internet banking portals will function normally throughout the holiday. You can transfer funds, pay bills, and manage your account without stepping foot in a bank. The restriction is strictly physical. No teller counters, no loan paperwork signing, no account opening. Just the glow of your phone screen.
Plan ahead. The festive calendar doesn't stop here. Himachal Pradesh will see another closure on October 29 for Karva Chauth. Gujarat joins the list on October 31 for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary. Additionally, remember that the second and fourth Saturdays of every month are standard non-working days for scheduled banks. Check your specific state’s calendar before you pack your cheques. Don't let a holiday cost you a business day.
