
Vattenfall’s move comes as Europe added 8.8 GW of new wind capacity in the first half of 2026, enough to power nearly seven million homes and cut fossil‑fuel imports by the equivalent of 25 LNG tankers, WindEurope estimates. Yet for every turbine erected, another is decommissioned, leaving blades and nacelle covers in landfills unless a circular solution appears.
Partnering with design studio Superuse, Vattenfall converted a retired Austrian turbine’s nacelle cover into a 10‑metre‑long, 4‑metre‑wide, 3‑metre‑high tiny house. The structure houses a kitchen, bathroom, living area, a heat pump, solar panels and a solar water heater. Superuse’s design team emphasized low‑energy processing to preserve the material’s integrity.
The initiative echoes other blade repurposing projects: 57 blades from Denmark’s Nørre Økse Sø wind farm now form the façade of a multi‑storey car park in Lund, and blades have even been turned into alpine skis and solar‑panel frames. Vattenfall’s Director of Environment and Sustainability, Eva Julius‑Philipp, says these pilot projects aim to test scalability and stimulate market demand.
Recycling the composite core of blades remains difficult because glass, carbon, epoxy, balsa and metal layers bind tightly. Vattenfall currently uses mechanical grinding to produce composite flakes for new products and pyrolysis to recover fibres, but high‑energy processes can lower material value. Julius‑Philipp notes that 100% circularity of composite materials by 2030 will require both tech innovation and regulatory support.
Only Austria, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands have binding national bans on blade landfilling; the EU has yet to enforce a continent‑wide rule. Vattenfall urges Brussels to adopt a legally binding framework, hoping the European Commission’s Circular Economy Act—expected to be proposed later this year—will enable scalable, cost‑effective, low‑energy circular value chains.
The next milestone is the Commission’s proposal deadline, after which member states could formalize bans and incentives for blade reuse, setting the stage for widespread adoption of Vattenfall’s circular solutions.
