Delhi police detained 7,000 protesters on Oct. 10, including CJP leaders, lawyers, former state chief ministers and journalists, as part of a 35,000‑strong security deployment that surrounded the capital.
The protest, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after allegations surfaced that the SIR process in the electoral rolls was compromised.
Opposition leaders branded the operation an "undeclared emergency" and accused the government of foreign interference aimed at destabilising the nation, while the administration maintained that the heavy security measures were necessary to preserve public order.
Metro services were halted and trains bound for Delhi were diverted, leaving commercial hubs deserted and disrupting millions of commuters.
The Supreme Court will hear petitions on the legality of the detentions next Tuesday, with the government expected to defend its use of force and the police to explain the operational protocols employed during the clampdown.
