Head Constable Farid Ahmed and Selection Grade Constable Muhammad Yaqoob were found dead inside a white Toyota Corolla parked at Ziarat Morh in the Sana area of Batote, Ramban district, Jammu & Kashmir, on Tuesday night.
Both officers were posted at the District Police Lines and were discovered unconscious a few minutes after the vehicle was spotted by local residents. They were rushed to District Hospital Ramban, where attending physicians declared them dead at 11:15 p.m.
Ramban police chief said the department has launched a full investigation, and forensic experts will perform a post‑mortem to determine the cause of death. The chief added that no suspicious activity was reported in the area before the incident.
The incident follows a spate of unexplained deaths among police personnel in the region, including a 2024 case in Pahalgam where a constable fell from a bridge. The Jammu & Kashmir Home Department has urged calm and assured that the matter will be treated as a priority.
A resident of Ziarat Morh, who witnessed the car, said the vehicle had been idling for about 30 minutes before a sudden blackout. "We heard a faint sound of a breakaway, then everything went silent," he recalled.
The coroner’s office will convene next Tuesday to review the autopsy findings, and the police will circulate a list of potential witnesses. The investigation remains active, with authorities preparing to file a report with the judicial authorities by the end of next week.
