The Karimganj Police Commissioner announced that the arrests took place on September 10 after the investigation linked the officers to a kidnapping that led to a Rs 14 lakh robbery.
The incident began when a local businessman sent his associate with Rs 25 lakh to deliver to a contact in Dharmanagar, Tripura. Upon arrival at Patharkandi Railway Station around 12:30 pm, five men—including the two police officers—forced the associate into a Mahindra Bolero and drove him to Chandkhira, where they extracted Rs 14 lakh in cash.
Police records show the officers had used the station’s Emergency Response Support System (ERSS 112) vehicle to abduct the associate from the station. The officers, acting under orders from Sub‑Inspector M. Nongthoiba Singha, then took him to the Mundamala field area to seize the money.
During the probe, investigators recovered Rs 1 lakh of the stolen cash from the residences of both Anwar Hossain and Shuklabaidya, leading to their immediate arrest. The two officers were produced before the Karimganj District Court later that day.
The chief accused, Sub‑Inspector M. Nongthoiba Singha, is still at large. Police officials said they are coordinating with the Central Crime Branch to locate him and plan a raid before the hearing scheduled for October 5.
For the associate, the ordeal left him shaken but unharmed. He said he was terrified when the officers boarded his train and forced him into a vehicle, describing the experience as “a nightmare that felt like a robbery straight out of a crime drama.”
