In a video posted by LPU's registrar on 27 September, three hostel residents claimed no rape had taken place in room 504, a claim that later students said was pre‑programmed. They told the camera that they had lived there for two months and that no incident had occurred. The clip was cut and shared on Instagram, sparking a wave of outrage.
Earlier in the week, a student alleged that a female classmate had been sexually assaulted by a construction worker on campus and that she had committed suicide. The claim, which had no corroborating evidence, ignited protests that saw students vandalising campus property and blocking the Jalandhar‑Phagwara highway. Police on the scene reported no records of a crime, and the senior superintendent said the university had yet to receive any formal complaint.
Dr Gulati said the unrest was a conspiracy to defame the university, while the students said they had been told what to say and that their consent was not sought. She added that anti‑social elements were behind the allegations.
The university has now opened an internal review and asked students to remain calm. Campus police are investigating the authenticity of the video and the alleged assault. A meeting between student representatives and administration is scheduled for 29 September.
