A 10‑foot by 5‑foot by 5‑foot cement tank collapsed in a cluster of rented shanties in Gurugram’s Sector 83 on Sunday, sending debris over the four‑year‑old Sumaiya and another child.
The tank, finished on September 25, was filled and residents urged to use it. When Rubina Bibi, the wife of mason Sharif Ali, brought her daughter in, the wall gave way, crushing both children and their mothers.
Police filed an FIR under Section 106 of the Building and Other Construction (Approval and Regulation) Act, demanding the contractor’s arrest. 'The accused will be taken into custody soon,' said a senior officer.
Rubina Bibi, a housekeeping worker at G‑21 Society, lost her daughter, while the other mother, whose name remains undisclosed, suffered severe injuries.
The bodies were handed to families after post‑mortems, and investigators are examining the tank’s structural integrity and the contractor’s compliance with safety norms.
