Trump told a rally in Washington on Thursday that the U.S. should tie voter registration to biometric data, pointing to India and Brazil as models.
He claimed both countries link voter ID to a biometric database, but the White House noted that India does not require mandatory linking; Aadhaar is voluntary.
India’s Aadhaar system, used by over 1.3 billion people, stores fingerprints and iris scans, but voters can choose whether to link it to their electoral roll.
In contrast, U.S. voter identification largely relies on self‑attestation, with no nationwide biometric verification.
White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the claim misrepresents India’s approach and that any biometric initiative would need bipartisan support and privacy safeguards.
The White House clarified India’s voluntary system, sparking calls for congressional review of the feasibility of biometric voter IDs.
