Nimisha Thakuria, a 22‑year‑old student of Gauhati University’s integrated five‑year course, was found unconscious near Garal PHC at 4:30 a.m. after spending Friday night at the homestay. Three men carried her to the health centre, where doctors declared her dead before she was shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Deputy Commissioner Bolin Deuri said investigators are scrutinising the homestay’s records and verifying guest logs, with particular focus on Ashiq Ali, who was detained in connection with the case. The homestay, known as "Rudra’s Kitchen," had reportedly accommodated guests without proper documentation. Deuri warned that if evidence of wrongdoing surfaces, all staff linked to the establishment could face arrest.
Deepjyoti Thakuria, Nimisha’s father, called for stern action, demanding that the culprit receive a punishment equal to what his child endured. He told reporters, "I want justice. What my child faced, the culprit should face a similar situation." The emotional appeal underscores the family’s insistence on accountability.
Investigators will examine the circumstances of Nimisha and Ali’s meeting, their movements that night, and injuries recorded during the inquest. The post‑mortem report, expected next week, will determine whether foul play is involved and whether the case will proceed to criminal court, potentially bringing legal sanctions against the homestay.
