In Connaught Place a man from Srinagar raised a placard reading “Narendra Modi zindabad, CJP murdabad,” and shouted pro‑Modi slogans amid a crowd chanting anti‑government slogans. The protester, Fahim Nazir, said he was there to challenge Rahul Gandhi’s claims of vote theft. When a fellow protester began chanting anti‑government slogans, tensions flared. Nazir later described being struck on the head and arm by an unidentified assailant.
Delhi Police filed a First Information Report against the assailants after Nazir’s complaint. The incident comes as opposition leaders demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Rahul Gandhi’s supporters, according to the FIR, engaged in a physical altercation with Nazir.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari posted a video of the assault on X, condemning Congress workers for “attacking” a citizen who raised slogans in support of PM Modi. Bhandari framed the incident as evidence of an “anarchist Congress” attempting to undermine democracy. The video shows supporters surrounding Nazir and striking him while he attempted to speak. The BJP’s statement intensified the already tense political atmosphere in Delhi.
Police are investigating the assault, and the FIR lists the assault as a possible offense under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code. Legal experts say the case could lead to charges of assault and public disorder. The incident may also affect the opposition’s campaign against the Election Commissioner, as the protest has drawn heightened scrutiny from both ruling and opposition parties.
