On Tuesday, the Madras High Court issued an order that non-Hindus cannot enter Agamic temples in Tamil Nadu without first affirming reverence for the deity and signing an undertaking. The order cites the 1947 Temple Entry and Maintenance Act and the precedent set by Kalyan Dass that temple precincts must remain sacrosanct. The ruling specifically references the Chief Minister's recent Meenakshi Temple visit, where Joseph Vijay, a Christian, signed the undertaking and performed the puja without being asked to convert. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, in a statement, praised the court's "inclusive approach" and said he had no intention of altering his faith. An elderly devotee from Coimbatore noted, "The temple has always respected all faiths; this rule will keep that tradition alive." Temple trustees will file a review of the order before the court's next session on September 12.
