The 59205 express was hurtling between Lalpur and Gopjam stations when a three‑foot iron bar, deliberately placed on the rails, slammed into the locomotive, shattering its engine but sparing passengers.
The incident was first reported by railway worker Rajeshbhai Ramkhiladibhai Meena, who filed a complaint at the Lalpur police station after spotting the obstruction near the track.
Police promptly registered a case under the relevant provisions, naming the accused as unknown and launching a probe overseen by Incharge Inspector AG Jadeja of Lalpur station.
Authorities are canvassing CCTV footage and interviewing nearby residents to determine whether the act was a deliberate sabotage aimed at jeopardising public safety or an isolated vandalism.
The train crew’s quick response, combined with swift track clearance, prevented a derailment that could have caused multiple casualties.
A formal investigation report is expected by the end of next week, after which the Railway Ministry will decide whether to impose penalties on the culprits and strengthen track‑side surveillance.
