Pillai said the SIR process now forces 99.9% of Indians to prove citizenship, a shift he called a "fundamental betrayal" of the right to vote. "You are asking 99.9 per cent Indians to prove for potential 0.1 per cent illegals," Pillai told reporters.
Former Delhi lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung, a key signatory, said the delegation was blocked from reaching the Election Commission’s headquarters, with a constable preventing their entry. "The country's former home secretary was stopped by a constable," Jung said.
Yogendra Yadav described the petition as "one of the darkest moments in Indian electoral democracy," while activist Anjali Bhardwaj accused authorities of barricading roads to the Commission, calling it a constitutional violation. "Every road leading to the poll body’s headquarters was barricaded," she said.
The notice will be lodged with the Election Commission, which must decide whether to launch an inquiry before the next parliamentary session; a decision could trigger a formal impeachment process before Parliament convenes in December.
