The slogan first surfaced during the 2018 Rafale jet deal, when Gandhi accused the Modi government of corruption, sparking a nationwide debate on defense procurement.
In May 2019, Gandhi filed an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court, not for the slogan itself but for misattributing it to the court.
The Supreme Court also issued a notice to BJP MP Mahesh Shrishrimal, who claimed that Gandhi's remarks at a Rajasthan rally had offended party supporters.
With the trial court barred from proceeding, the case will now be heard by the Supreme Court, with a hearing scheduled for the coming weeks.
