Van‑Houston McMillion, 14, is now a sophomore at Calhoun Community College in Huntsville, after enrolling at just 12 in Fall 2025.
Emma‑Sara McMillion recalled how, at age two, he was already reading street signs, a talent that set him apart from peers. She said he could identify letters and sound out words before most children were learning the alphabet.
When the college’s admissions team met with the family, they evaluated not just his test scores—he scored near the top of the state’s standardized college admissions test—but also his emotional maturity. Dr. Jimmy Hodges said the decision reflected "curiosity, hard work and community."
McMillion’s first year yielded a 3.5 GPA and a spot on the Dean’s List, despite juggling courses like American National Government and Intermediate College Algebra. He told WAFF 48 that procrastination was "not an option" and that time management was key.
Looking ahead, he expects to finish his Associate of Science in Chemistry by May 2026, before turning 16, and plans to explore graduate studies and start a tech startup. Wes Rakestraw praised his discipline, saying it inspires everyone on campus.
