Dylan Alverson, the owner of Modern Times Café in Minneapolis, announced that the restaurant will shut down permanently by the end of 2026 after operating a donation‑based model since January 2024.
The café, which rebranded as Post Modern Times in January, had eliminated menu prices for six months to protest ICE, refusing to serve agents and offering 25 free meals daily.
Alverson said the experiment strained staff and drew long waits—customers sometimes waited up to two hours—and sparked neighborhood concerns over homelessness and drug use.
He plans to use the remaining months to celebrate the 16‑year legacy, host events, and collaborate with other independent restaurants to devise sustainable models that do not compromise principles.
