Police sub‑inspector Tanvir Singh Zala, a key member of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s personal security team, was found dead at his residence in Sector 27 Police Lines, Gandhinagar, after a single gunshot to the chest, witnesses say. The revolver used was his service weapon, and the sharp crack of the shot prompted nearby officers to rush inside, where they discovered his body.
The incident follows a disturbing pattern in Gandhinagar’s police circles: in September, constable Jhanvi Dabhi of the Shahibaug Police Headquarters died by hanging. Both cases raise questions about the mental health support available to officers stationed in high‑pressure environments.
Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police (SP) D. T. Gohil has said the investigation is underway, with forensic teams from the state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) already examining the scene for ballistic evidence and fingerprints. A post‑mortem is scheduled at the Civil Hospital, and the preliminary autopsy report will be released within 48 hours.
According to SP Gohil, the police have uncovered indications of a family dispute and marital issues that may have contributed to Zala’s state of mind. The officer is survived by two children, aged five and six, who will be offered counseling as part of the department’s welfare program.
The Gujarat government has announced an internal review of the mental‑wellness protocols for security detail officers. A senior police liaison will report findings to the Home Ministry by the end of the month, and a special task force will be set up to assess the overall support framework for officers in similar roles.
