The raids targeted three separate sites, including Barpeta Road, Howly, and a house in Sorbhog, where NIA agents seized documents and a weapon—an effort that brought three suspects into custody.
Earlier this year, the NIA has intensified its focus on alleged jihadi networks across Assam, following a series of arrests in other districts that exposed a pattern of radicalisation. The current operation follows a coordinated sweep that began in January, aiming to dismantle a clandestine cell believed to be linked to extremist training camps.
The six detainees—Faruk Abdullah, Zakir Hussain, Chandbar Ali, and three unnamed individuals—are all residents of Baguriguri Pathar village in Sorbhog. The NIA spokesperson confirmed that the suspects face charges under Section 121A and 154 of the Indian Penal Code for conspiracy to commit terrorism.
Residents of Baguriguri Pathar reported an uptick in security presence, with a local shopkeeper noting, “The sudden raids caught us off guard, but we hope it brings safety.” The NIA is slated to file charges against the detainees by next Friday, after completing its forensic review of seized materials.
This crackdown is part of a larger strategy to curb radical networks in the Northeast, and officials anticipate further operations in neighboring districts over the coming weeks.
