The crash tore through the early‑afternoon kickoff as a single‑engine dump truck smashed into the field of a local high‑school match, sending a 6‑year‑old boy and a 35‑year‑old man to the ground. Eleven other players, staff and spectators were rushed to hospitals, with ages ranging from 5 to 68.
Captain Aaron Moses said the driver, a 34‑year‑old woman, was arrested on the scene and that the truck carried two children who were unharmed. Investigators are still piecing together why the vehicle crossed the pitch.
Police chief Joe Sullivan praised the spontaneous aid from spectators, noting the community’s quick response saved lives. He highlighted that the tragedy underscored Wichita’s collective resilience.
Mayor Lily Wu urged residents to stay clear of the area during the probe and expressed condolences on Facebook. She added that the city would cooperate fully with state authorities.
Authorities are examining the truck’s GPS logs and interviewing witnesses to determine if the crash was deliberate. A preliminary report will be released by Wichita Police by the end of the week.
