Ranjeev Puri, Michigan’s Democratic floor leader, is eyeing the top post in the state House as the November 3 midterm election could tilt the balance of power.
Puri, 42, won his seat in 2020 and became the first Sikh‑American elected to the Michigan House. He has served as a whip and now leads the party in a Republican‑controlled chamber.
Rep. Haley Stevens has publicly backed Puri’s bid, saying the party is poised to flip the House and give him the speakership. Puri also faces Republican challenger Allison Kay Fuller for his district seat.
The November 3 vote will decide both Puri’s re‑election and whether Democrats can seize the 110‑member chamber. A win would make him the first Indian‑American to preside over a state legislature, a milestone for representation.
