Amrinder Singh Warring’s X bio now reads "former PPCC president" – a stark reversal from his previous role as Punjab unit chief.
The announcement came a day after reports that Congress would ask Warring to step down, a move driven by weeks of factional wrangling within the state unit.
Warring himself confirmed the change, saying he was no longer the Punjab unit chief and that “some matters are internal” when asked about visiting the Delhi office.
The shift follows the party’s recent appointment of Sachin Pilot as general secretary in-charge of Punjab, replacing former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel.
Internal tensions have deepened, with supporters of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi demanding he be the party’s CM face for the 2027 elections; Warring had previously tried to bridge the gap by inviting a supporter onto the stage.
In August, Warring defended the Congress’s 2022 electoral loss, citing a fall from 80 seats to 18 and questioning the blame placed on him.
The leadership change signals a push for unity ahead of the 2027 assembly polls, with Congress likely to convene a further meeting to solidify its strategy.
