On September 28, the Supreme Court, through a bench headed by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, cancelled the bail of Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and three co‑accused for assaulting doctors at a municipal hospital in Thane district.
The court warned that elected officials cannot use their mandate to override law, noting that the Thane attack disrupted public order and that similar incidents have been reported elsewhere, including a Palghar case involving Shiv Sena leaders.
It emphasized that the authority granted by a ballot must remain within legal bounds, and that intimidation of medical professionals undermines public confidence and jeopardizes safe care delivery.
The bench directed the four to surrender before October 5, underscoring that no person, regardless of office, can claim supremacy over the discipline of law.
