Police in New South Wales arrested a 46‑year‑old man on Tuesday, Nov. 13, after detectives linked him to a fraudulent claim that he was wounded in the Dec. 14 Bondi Beach shooting.
The attack, carried out by father Sajid Akram and his son Naveed, killed 15 people during a Jewish festival on the beach and left dozens wounded.
The arrested man allegedly filed false statements and submitted fraudulent compensation applications to state insurance bodies, seeking financial relief he did not deserve.
He has been charged with publishing false and misleading material to obtain advantage and was granted conditional bail; he must appear at Parramatta Local Court on Nov. 18.
Meanwhile, Sajid Akram was shot dead by police during the attack, and Naveed remains in custody facing 78 charges, including 15 murders, with a committal hearing set for Feb. 24 next year.
Victims’ families have called for accountability as the justice system grapples with the fallout from the tragedy.
