At roughly 7:30 pm on Friday, Ghantasala Arjun Kumar was racing a delivery route on his motorcycle when a sudden surge of rainwater pushed him off the road into an open drain that had filled with a torrent of water.
The drain, located near the congested Hyderabad‑Pune highway, is notorious for being a death trap during monsoon season. The slick pavement and the sudden rise in water level caught the rider off guard, causing him to lose balance and fall.
Police officers and emergency response teams, alerted by nearby residents, arrived within minutes. They managed to pull Arjun out of the drain, and he was found breathing, with no visible injuries. The motorcycle, however, is still lodged inside the channel, trapped by the fierce current.
Hyderabad has seen severe waterlogging in recent days, with several parts of the city flooding and traffic snarling. The city’s open drains have become a recurring hazard, especially when the monsoon rains surge unexpectedly.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds for Hyderabad and surrounding districts through October 31. It also predicts isolated heavy spells on November 2 and 3, urging citizens to stay cautious and avoid water‑logged roads.
In light of the incident, the police have called for motorists to exercise caution and steer clear of areas prone to flooding. Meanwhile, city officials are reviewing drainage infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
