The Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) sent notices to five election officials in the 347‑Azamgarh Assembly constituency on a Friday following a Samajwadi Party press conference on Oct. 15 that claimed the name Vikas Yadav had been registered ten times in the electoral roll.
The CEO’s office received an investigation report from the District Election Officer in Azamgarh, which identified 13 entries bearing the name Vikas Yadav in Hindi. Two of these had already been deleted, while the remaining 11 entries corresponded to distinct individuals from different villages in the district.
Two of the entries were linked to a voter in the Chauri‑Chaura Assembly constituency of Gorakhpur district, indicating that the duplicate name was not confined to Azamgarh. For the other nine individuals, Form‑8 applications had been filed to correct their names and other details.
The CEO directed that notices be issued to the computer assistant at the registration centre, the Booth Level Officer (BLO), the then Election Registration Officer (ERO), and two Assistant EROs before initiating action under Section 32 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Charge sheets are also slated for the ERO and the assistants for negligence and laxity in supervising roll preparation.
In addition, the District Election Officer has been instructed to conduct a detailed examination of the electoral rolls in all assembly constituencies within the district and submit a comprehensive report within a week.
