ECL's Kumardihi A mine in Paschim Bardhaman district saw its lift cage stall after a rope detached from the pulley drum, trapping several workers 50 metres underground on Monday. No casualties were reported, and food and water were supplied to the stranded miners.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said rescue operations are underway on a war footing, with state officials maintaining communication and ensuring adequate ventilation inside the mine.
The Asansol‑Durgapur Police Commissioner, the district magistrate, the chief secretary and the home secretary have all been briefed, and a police team is on site coordinating the effort.
ECL is repairing the faulty lift mechanism while rescue crews work to bring the trapped workers to the surface, after which the mine will remain closed until conditions are safe.
