On Friday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined a bhajan clubbing session in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar park, a modern take on devotional singing held on the 110th birth anniversary of Deendayal Upadhyay.
Just a day earlier, Congress leader Priyank Kharge posted a scathing tweet on X, accusing Modi of using the event to distract from pending questions on the Election Commission and of being silent for 13 years.
BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan shot back, calling Kharge’s remarks a mockery of India’s bhajan and bhakti traditions, and accusing the Congress of insulting the nation’s heritage.
Kesavan added that under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership the party has lost three consecutive Lok Sabha elections and suffered nearly 100 assembly drubbings—a fact the Congress has denied.
Meanwhile, a 19‑year‑old participant in the clubbing event told reporters that the gathering felt like a revival of old‑school bhajan, and that Modi’s presence was seen as a gesture of unity.
The BJP has issued a formal statement demanding a rebuttal from the Congress, and the party is set to respond in a press conference tomorrow.
