The police encounter erupted after a viral clip showed a minor girl and her male companion allegedly being harassed by a group of youths in Jamui. Authorities responded to the video on September 21, filed an FIR the next day, and formed a Special Investigation Team.
The encounter itself, conducted by the Town Police Station, reportedly saw Yadav—identified as a driver who had recently returned from a family visit—run only a few steps before officers fired a warning shot that struck his leg. A mother of the accused claims the officers staged the incident by placing contraband in his hands to create the illusion of a genuine confrontation.
"I didn’t know about the incident until after the fact," Yadav’s mother told local media, insisting that her son was innocent and that the police were motivated to ‘save their jobs’. She further alleged that the officers ‘forced him to run’ and that the shooting was a mere show.
Jamui Superintendent Vishwajeet Dayal confirmed that police had received information about the alleged harassment on September 21 and that the encounter followed the viral video. Additional Director General KS Anupam later verified the arrest of Yadav and his accomplices.
The victim’s parents met Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who assured them of strict action and the safety of their daughter. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter, and the case is now under their investigation.
The allegations of a staged encounter have reignited debates over police accountability in Bihar, with civil society groups demanding a transparent judicial review of the incident.
