Patrick Lynch didn't just walk away. He hauled his eight-year-old son, James, and his six-year-old daughter, Caroline, to the upper level of a Mt. Lebanon parking garage and shoved them off. Then he jumped after them. All three hit the ground hard enough to kill them. It’s the kind of violence that shatters a suburb’s sense of safety in an afternoon.
Police found the bodies around 4:15 p.m. on November 3 near the 700 block of Washington Road, right next to the municipal building. Paramedics rushed in, trying to save the children, but it was too late. They pronounced all three dead at the scene. The Allegheny County Police and Sheriff’s Office are now working the case alongside local cops. No motive has surfaced yet.
Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Jason Haberman made one thing clear at the press conference: this isn’t a suicide. “We are treating this incident not as an accident,” he said. The distinction matters. It turns a tragedy into a crime scene. Investigators are still sifting through what might have driven a father to such a horrific act.
The fallout hit the schools fast. The Mt. Lebanon School District shut down Markham and Washington Elementary on Wednesday, November 4. It’s a small community, and as Haberman put it, “Everybody in the Mt. Lebanon community will know somebody involved.” Counselors are on standby for students and staff, and the district allowed kids at other schools to stay home if they needed space.
There’s no active threat to the public right now. But the investigation is just getting started. The next step is figuring out why. Until then, the garage stands silent, and the questions remain unanswered.
