Swatantra Bhardwaj walked out of Delhi court on bail this week, days after his arrest derailed the online frenzy surrounding his violent confession. The self-styled right-wing influencer had boasted on a widely shared video podcast about thrashing the father of a Cokroach Janata Party (CJP) supporter. The incident, which took place during the July 20 protest march at Jantar Mantar, saw Bhardwaj claim he "cracked the skull" of the elderly man.
His arrest in September followed the viral spread of the podcast clip, where he detailed the assault with graphic specificity. The victim's family, representing the CJP, filed a complaint alleging severe bodily harm. Bhardwaj had previously secured interim bail last month, a legal maneuver that kept him out of custody for a short period before his final release.
The CJP, known for its satirical and political commentary, condemned the violence as an attack on dissent. The party’s supporters had gathered at Jantar Mantar on July 20 to voice concerns over government policies. Bhardwaj’s actions, captured in his own words, painted a picture of aggressive intimidation that contrasts sharply with the peaceful nature of the protest.
Now on bail, Bhardwaj faces a trial that will test the legal boundaries of influencer accountability. The victim’s family has vowed to seek maximum punishment, arguing that the assault was premeditated and targeted. Legal experts note that the bail grant does not absolve him of charges, but it allows him to continue his public presence while the case proceeds in court.
