Seventeen inmates bolted from the Theni sub-jail late Monday night, leaving behind a trail of violence and a frantic manhunt across Tamil Nadu. The escapee group, which shared a single cell, allegedly assaulted prison personnel when officers entered the room to check on an unwell inmate. Gr. II Police personnel Thangapandi, attached to the Theni district jail, sustained a head injury in the scuffle and was rushed to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku. Two other jail police personnel also suffered minor injuries, according to the police report.
The aftermath triggered a massive security response. Inspector General of Police (IGP), South Zone, Vijayendra Bidari, confirmed that one of the 17 escapees had been apprehended during immediate combing operations. "One escaped prisoner has been arrested by police during combing operations," Bidari stated. The remaining 16 are on the loose. Police have formed 17 special teams specifically tasked with tracing and recapturing the fugitives.
Neighboring districts are bracing for the fallout. Dindigul Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar confirmed to ANI that 16 precautionary check posts were set up in the neighbouring Dindigul district. Police in Idukki, Madurai, and Dindigul districts were placed on high alert, and photographs of the escaped accused were circulated among officials to aid in identification. Intensive vehicle checks are ongoing across the region.
The incident has prompted a formal case registration, and further investigation is underway. Police are continuing intensive efforts to trace and apprehend the remaining escaped inmates, with the spotlight firmly on the Theni sub-jail's security protocols.
