India Bloc leaders finalized the procedure for a symbolic "public impeachment" of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They will convene a mock Parliament at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi on Friday, 30 October, at 3:30 p.m.
The meeting, attended by Congress general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, and K C Venugopal, along with representatives from the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, JMM, CPI(M), and CPI, set a one‑speaker‑per‑party format. Kharge was in Bengaluru at the time, but the opposition confirmed the venue after being denied permission to use other locations.
During the mock session, the bloc plans to debate the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged vote theft. Gaurav Gogoi, Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, said the debate would expose how the SIR has eroded democratic norms and mobilize public support for a united push to safeguard elections.
Jairam Ramesh blasted Kumar on X, accusing him of violating constitutional principles and lying to the Supreme Court, and hinted that the current administration was complicit. He framed the impeachment as a necessary act to restore credibility to the electoral process.
The opposition will follow the mock Parliament with a rally on 1 November, drawing people from across the country. The event is expected to pressure Kumar into resigning and to galvanize a nationwide demand for electoral reforms.
