On September 30, R Sreelekha, a BJP councillor from Sasthamangalam ward, filed a resignation letter to mayor VV Rajesh, but the corporation secretary never received it, leaving the formal process hanging.
The resignation threatened to reduce BJP’s tally from 50 to 49 in the 101‑member council, weakening its narrow majority that relies on an independent’s support.
After discussions, BJP state general secretary S Suresh convinced the former police chief to retract her letter, saying her WhatsApp post reflected a momentary emotional state rather than a calculated move.
State BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar is slated to meet Sreelekha tomorrow to reconcile differences, signalling the party’s intent to present a united front.
With the resignation withdrawn, no‑confidence motion against Mayor Rajesh still requires 51 votes, a threshold the BJP cannot meet, ensuring the administration remains stable for now.
