The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, had earlier endorsed eight names; the Centre’s decision to appoint only seven was announced via a post on X by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, signalling a selective approval process.
With a sanctioned strength of 60, the Delhi High Court’s working bench will swell to 67, potentially easing the caseload of pending criminal and civil matters across the National Capital Region.
The withheld name, Gurvinder Pal Singh, is a senior district judge whose elevation was stalled, raising questions about the criteria used to filter Collegium recommendations.
The formal notification completes the appointment procedure; the court’s new composition will take effect the day after the notification, and a separate decision on Singh’s candidacy is expected within the next fortnight.
