The NMC tribunal today declared that Rebecca Burwood had abused a 99‑year‑old patient’s trust, siphoning £370,000 over five years and orchestrating the transfer of the woman’s £400,000 home into her own name. The patient, who had fallen in 2017 and was placed in Bryn Yr Haul Care Home in 2018, was left vulnerable and alone, a circumstance Burwood exploited for personal gain.
Burwood used the ill‑fortune’s funds to purchase a car, a campervan and pay for home‑extension work that the patient never approved. Reports also link the debt to cosmetic surgery expenses, a detail the tribunal noted as an attempt to inflate the nurse’s own lifestyle.
The case first surfaced in March 2023 when a bank flagged large cash withdrawals from the patient’s account. North Wales Police were alerted, and a fellow nurse later reported overhearing Burwood urging the patient to sign property documents.
The tribunal’s findings were stark: Burwood’s conduct constituted serious misconduct, and she was removed from the professional register, preventing her from practising anywhere in the United Kingdom. The patient, whose name remains confidential, died while under care of the same facility.
Police are now investigating whether Burwood’s actions rise to criminal fraud, and the NMC has warned that similar breaches could lead to stricter penalties for nursing staff nationwide.
