Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) announced on Thursday that it has doubled its battery energy storage capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, from 3.55 GWh in June 2026 to a staggering 6.63 GWh. The move positions the company as the single largest BESS operator worldwide, controlling more than 50% of India's 12.6 GWh total.
The expanded bank can hold enough clean power to light about two million homes every day and could keep Delhi Metro, Nagpur, Patna and Vizag running for hours during peak demand. A side‑by‑side comparison shows the storage is equivalent to the battery capacity of over 150,000 mid‑size electric cars.
Khavda sits on 538 square kilometres of sun‑rich land where AGEL is building a 30 GW renewable complex; the BESS employs lithium‑ion cells, an energy management system and automated telemetry to optimise charge cycles and deliver grid services. The integration stabilises intermittent wind and solar output, cutting curtailment and improving dispatch reliability.
AGEL’s executive director Sagar Adani said the company is on track to add 10 GWh in fiscal 2026‑27 and aims for 50 GWh over five years. The expansion is part of a broader push to make India's power system more resilient and lower‑carbon as demand climbs.
