A 32‑year‑old woman was arrested in Nagpur Tuesday night after she crashed a speeding Kia Seltos into seven pedestrians near the Dinshaw factory in the Gorewada area. Three of the injured were children, their parents now in the hospital.
The vehicle first struck another SUV, striking its driver Balu Kulmethe as he stepped out with his daughter. The Seltos lost control, then smashed into three children walking on the road, before hitting Harish Rambhau Revatkar and Ashish Nakhate.
Emergency services rushed the victims to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment. A crowd gathered outside the police station, demanding action; the officers managed to calm the mob and secure the scene.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Annapurna Singh said the suspect is in custody and has undergone a medical examination. She added that the reports will determine the next steps. CCTV footage from the area is also under review for a full reconstruction of the crash.
Police suspect the driver was intoxicated, but confirmation will come after the examination results. If blood alcohol levels are above the legal limit, the woman could face charges under the Road Transport Act and criminal liability for causing injury.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter traffic enforcement and public awareness about drunk driving in Nagpur.
